Neck Traction Equipment And How It Is Used

By Megan Landry

Neck traction is a type of physical therapy designed to alleviate pain by gently stretching the cervical area of the spine. Physicians, chiropractors, and therapists frequently use this technique to relieve neck pain. However, it is also possible for patients to perform certain techniques in the privacy of their own home, if quality neck traction equipment is available.

Medical professionals perform such techniques in various ways. For instance, mechanical devices are sometimes used, which were developed to gradually open up the area of space between each vertebrae. Ideally, this will relieve pressure on the spinal discs, and subsequently eliminate discomfort and pain. Intermittent traction is often recommended by certain professionals also.

A technique referred to as over-the-door traction is a popular type of therapy for those with cervical problems. The patient's neck is placed in a kind of harness that hangs over a sturdy door. The harness holds either water bags or weights, which are used to gradually stretch the area and ideally alleviate discomfort and pain.

Slant boards or inversion tables are other types of equipment that are frequently used on patients with cervical problems. An inversion table is used to lower the head and chest so that gravity will gently pull these areas in a downward motion. This can also be accomplished by placing the patient on the aforementioned slant board. The latter is a wide plank that is cushioned and positioned on a simple fulcrum that remains stationary throughout the process. However, this particular technique is not suitable for those with blood pressure problems, vertigo, or glaucoma.

A basic neck brace may be recommended by numerous practitioners as well. Brace of this kind are generally only worn throughout the day, but it is often necessary for a patient to wear a softer version of this brace when in bed. This will depend primarily upon his or her doctor's recommendations and the purpose for which the device is needed.

Equipment is not always needed to complete certain techniques. For example, some practitioners recommend various yoga poses to reduce pressure in the cervical region. However, it is always wise to first consult a medical doctor before attempting to participate in yoga. If one does not perform the motions correctly, his or her condition may be exacerbated.

Using an orthopedic pillow is another simple form of such therapy. Devices of this type are specially made to include a large, high role that supports the shoulders of the individual, while allowing the head to hang down. However, they should not be used while one is sleeping, and they should never be used for more than thirty minutes at a time unless otherwise directed by a medical professional.

Many techniques are available, and therefore clients must often participate in different therapies before discovering the best technique. A chiropractor or doctor will be able to advise patients on such matters. Self treatment is never recommended.

Neck traction equipment should always be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. Attempting to use such devices without proper instructions can result in serious injury. Anyone suffering from cervical problems or chronic pain should seek the advice of a medical practitioner as soon as possible.
